Cabaret

Date

April 2025

Role

Lighting Designer

Designer Statement

Cabaret is the story of Cliff, so my lighting design shows the world of Germany through the eyes of Cliff. When he first arrives in Berlin, he views the Kit Kat Club as a pure fantasy, an escape from reality. The Club is filled with bright flashing colors with many warm tones insinuating a fantasy. As the show progresses and Cliff starts to learn more about the true state of Germany, the brightness slowly begins to dim and the saturated color starts to fade away with shadows becoming much more prominent. The show ends with large shadows, unflattering angles, and an almost purely stark white color. The theatre fills with haze and everything looks unsettling.
