Designer Statement
Change is a musical directed, written, and composed by 2 students at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Change is a collection of several scenes with different characters all revolving around a change in life, from the loss of a relative to finding new love. All of these scenes needed to be different, but keeping them all connected. Working on this show was a real challenge. One challenge was that we were in a non-theatrical environment. This show was performed in the concert hall at UMD. Because of this, I was not allowed to hang or change the focus of any light, and there was only a small group of lights that I could change the gel of. The other challenge was with the lighting board. The lighting board was something I had never seen before. I was used to using ETC EOS lighting boards, and this one was much more difficult to use. To create cues, it was a long tedious process of putting a lighting look into a sub-master and then assigning that to a cue. And the process became even more difficult if you wanted to remove any cue that wasn't the last cue.
