Designer Statement
Art is a story about friendship and issues that arise through them. The biggest challenge was with this show being in the round. I wanted each location to feel different, but I wanted the lighting to not be a distraction. I never want to distract the audience but help amplify these characters. I had 4 front light systems and the opposing sides had similarly toned gels, a warm diagonal, and a cool diagonal. I landed on a red and yellow for the warm, and a blue and lavender for the cool. But I made sure to keep these gels very unsaturated, as a reference to Serge's painting, said to be plain white, but Serge sees hints of color. Each character goes into a space outside of the world to deliver several monologues throughout the show. I only highlighted the actor and left the rest of the stage dark during these moments, so you feel like you are in the character's mind and not in their apartment. Serge's space was much heavier on the cooler light. Serge is very direct and blunt in his delivery. On the opposite side of things, Marc is the opposition to Serge for most of the show. Marc gets very emotional and heated throughout, so her space is very dominant with the warm gels. Yvan tries to balance the two. Yvan is a mix between the warm and the cool. During Marc and Serge's conflicts throughout the show, Yvan is trying to resolve the fight and retain their friendship. Each of the houses that we visit in the show also reflects these color choices.
