Silent Sky
Date
March 2023
Role
Lighting Designer
Designer Statement
Silent Sky shows the story of a young woman who works her way up through the sexist 1900s science field and eventually changes how the world's astronomers identify stars. The majority of the show's lighting is very realistic, except for the points where Henrietta begins to discover the vast array of stars in the galaxy, being encompassed in purple and blue dream-like sequences. The 1900s style hanging light bulbs are representations of blinking stars, a bleed between her two worlds, work life and dreams of space. One of Henrietta's grand discoveries at the end of act 1 is how she can identify a star based on the change in luminosity, or pulse. Fading in and out the hanging bulbs, and intensifying them as she fully comprehends her discovery was a great way to show the audience the concept that she is discovering.
